Today is an absolutely perfect day. Perfect! So perfect, in fact, that I kicked off my Birkies at the prairie labyrinth entrance and walked the labyrinth barefoot. This has to be the first time I've ever walked the labyrinth barefoot in November!
I expected the soil and grass to be warm, like the gentle breeze. Nope! My feet soon became as cold as the earth beneath them. And I realized...I realized the earth knows. It isn't fooled by the warm temperatures or the bright sun. It knows, deep in its core, that November in Iowa is a time for cooling and growing darkness.
As I felt and pondered this story from the earth, I went down the path into other stories the earth has told me. The common theme? Trust. I can trust earth stories. When dark clouds gather to the west, I can trust a storm is brewing - whether the weather professional says it is or not. When glaciers melt, I can trust the earth is warming. When green grass breaks through cold soil, I can trust spring is soon to come. I can trust the earth's truth. I just need to be still and listen....
